Has anyone ever recycled a washing machine at those recycling plants? If so how much have you gotten?

Just curious I have two in my backyard is it worth recycling them or sell them to individuals?
More likely you will have to pay to have them recycled. That money essentially covers the overhead of dismantling the items.

Your washing machine does have some value in the internal parts, the motors have some value by themselves, the wire, the various metals used elsewhere, they all have value, not much in the case of single machines, but as you enlarge the scale of the recovery, the more money you can make if you have several tons of recovered steel.

In some cases, if you strip the machines down to basic component pieces, you can save the cost of the recycling fee if you happen to have a scrap metal dealer in your area. Check with your local waste hauler or unit of government office (city hall if in town) and see what information they have regarding appliance disposal. If it is in pieces, any junkyard wil likely take it off your hands, as for what you might make off them? not much.

If you try to sell them to people, most want them working. If you know what is wrong with each machine, you might be able to sell them for the good parts to someone who is looking to fix their own machine.

I feel like I look around me and all I see is the destruction of nature and humans out of balance with the the earth. It makes me so sad. I thought going to school as an environmental science major would make me feel empowered but I just feel like we are doomed to kill off our world. It seems that people care more about religion, pop culture, and money than the earth that sustains their very existence. How do I feel better about this. Please only thoughtful and polite answers, this is really bothering me. After years of thinking about it I just feel grief and hopelessness.
If you are saddened by this, then you must try to do something about it. The world can change, even if it is very little, just by the efforts of one person. Get together with some people who share your mind set, and educate others on what we can do to make the world a safer place for all life. We will never get anything accomplished if we sit around and do nothing. Instead of thinking about things, get up and do them. There is a big difference between the two. I am huge on the environment, and yes, it is a large task for one person, but as others see you making an effort, they will join you as well.
Nature takes care of itself. It addapts very well but if we continue to push too hard nature will do what natures dose best and slap us into submission. Tis the nature of things.
Make a difference in your part of the world, neighborhood etc. Then you will start to overcome your sadness. Go forth and do this.
Just know this.

You are not alone.

Why does BP hate the environment?

I dont understand why they wanted to blow up the oil rig and kill all of the wildlife. Did it help them make money or something? I am so angry with BP and I think that they need to all get the death penalty. And now they are burning sea turtles by burning the oil in the gulf. This makes me so angry and I need serious answers to explain this!
BP do not blow up their own oil rigs, presumably it was an accident which caused the explosion, it was originally suggested that it might have been a terrorist attack but until the independent accident investigators have done their job we will not know. Though it seems possible as they have not be able to carry out their investigations thoroughly until the leak is stopped, that much of the evidence will have been destroyed.

The real question we should all be asking ourselves and our politicians is should governments give any of the oil companies deep sea drilling rights until they have the capabilities of dealing with a disaster at this depth. Many experts have been pointing out for years the dangers of deep sea drilling and warning of such disasters as this, which is not the first one.

This latest disaster will not be the last, the oil companies are all aware of this but they make such huge profits they can pay the compensation required and while they do not hate the environment their bottom line is the profit they can make, exactly the same as any of the major industries.

They are perfectly willing to close down a outlet and put thousands of loyal workers out of work if they can move the business to another country where they can pay those new workers less money and get grants from the new country

Is this some kind of crazy effect of Global warming?

This year alone two cyclones hit us, forcing the government to declare a state of emergency. Then our neighboring islanders have to evacuate their island before a given date due to the rise in sea level, after that we received tsunami warnings, one after the other, but fortunately, it misses us, striking samoa etc. Now we are experiencing earthquakes, but whats worse? before the sun sets, the temperature has already fallen to 20 dec. and still decreasing. We have no factories to ruin the environment, all foods are from the plantation, and still we are going to receive the negative effects caused by larger islands???? tis is crazy!!
Im guessing youre in the South Pacific Islands, this is a part of the world that is facing threats from global warming in the form of rising sea-levels and coral bleaching.

As youll know, many of the coastlines are gentle inclines that run down to the sea, this means that only a small rise in sea-levels is needed for the sea to progress further inland. The good news is that the overall rise in the SPI is less than the global average its about 2mm a year compared to the average of 3mm.

However, with many low lying communities, the prospects over the next 100 to 300 years arent looking too promising.

You mentioned about the cyclones. One of the consequences of a warmer climate is that storms will increase, primarily because the heat in the oceans and the atmosphere provides the energy needed to fuel these storms. With or without global warming, there would have been cyclones anyway so its not possible to say that such and such a storm was the result of global warming.

Instead however, we can look at the long term trends and see if theres a link between temperatures and the number of storms. This is something Ive been working on for 4 years now and this has involved the analysis of 44,000 storms. The work on the Atlantic hurricanes has reached a preliminary conclusion, there is no reason to suspect that the analysis of typhoons, cyclones etc will provide a different conclusion.

The findings are complex and there are some as yet unexplained anomalies. In general what weve found is in line with other similar studies, the key points being that the overall number of storms has increased and looks likely to continue to do so.

Any sudden rise in sea-levels would be attributable to several factors including the alignments of the Sun, Earth and the Moon, air-pressure in the surrounding areas, wind speeds and direction and the proximity to perihelion and aphelion.

This last factor doesnt apply as its the wrong time of year. In fact, around this time of year tides are lower because the gravitational effect of the Sun is less.

In referring to islands being evacuated Im wondering if this is the Carteret Islands, the evacuation process has begun and the inhabitants are being moved to the Papuan New Guinean mainland. In time other SPIs will follow suit.

The earthquakes are almost certainly not linked to climate change, there is no short-term mechanism that would allow such a thing to happen. Climate change may act as a trigger and cause an earthquake to happen marginally sooner than it would have done otherwise but not be the actual cause.

Similarly, any rapid decline in temperature is the result of local weather conditions, a look at some local weather maps should highlight the causes.

One of the unfortunate consequences of living in the SPIs or in places such as Africa and Asia, is that its these places that are feeling the worst impacts of climate change and will continue to do so into the future. Something of a travesty considering that the places that have contributed the least to global warming are the ones that are suffering the consequences the most.

Climate change...what is going to happen when CO2 levels do not decrease...?

I believe there is not a snowball

Do you think it

If you are talking about survival situations where you may end up with a flooded house, definitely it is a good idea to have both, of course, you would have to add a high volume air pump to inflate it in the shortest time possible. The convenience of the idea would also depend on how far you are from a body of water. I live 3 blocks from a lake so, I do have one and of course, I use it for fishing as well. Cheers.
If you own the second, you damn well better own the first.

If you have a use for a portable boat, get one. I have an inflatable that I use for setting traps. Quite handy.
If you are anywhere near somewhere you can use it, an easily-transported boat would seem like a great idea to me!!! Boating of any kind is wonderful fun and can be great exercise as well. You can fish, putter around on the lake, go down easy rapids, cross over to the other side of the lake for hiking and exploring without having to go around by foot: all kinds of fun! Of course, as the first responder said, if you get the boat, get the life-jacket too: even if you are a good swimmer, it is STILL a very good idea (and in many places a legal requirement) to have everyone in the boat wear a life-jacket at all times.

What evidence is there that man is causing global warming?

A. CO2 emissions are increasing. In 1870 the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere was about 290 ppm. As of 2010, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has risen to 388 ppm. As explained below, very carefully calibrated measurements have confirmed that humans activities are the primary cause of this increase.

Good way to keep my room cold?

i got ice cubes in my room but i need it colder i got a fan in my room i got a air con in my kittchen wtf ells can i do
Several things you can do, how practical they are will depend on your situation.

Move around as little as possible, the less energy you expend the cooler youll be.

Drink loads of water, if you start to dehydrate youll sweat less, sweating is one of the bodies cooling mechanisms. If your urine is darker than normal it may well be that youre not drinking enough.

Close curtains and blinds to block out sunlight, open curtains and blinds in rooms not exposed to sunlight.

Rub medicinal alcohol onto your skin, alcohol evapourates quickly and draws heat from your body in the process.

Trick your mind by thinking of cold things and cold places, imagine swimming in freezing cold water.

If you have a ceiling fan, place a bowl of cold water underneath it, ideally with ice-cubes in it

Eat mints, apply mint based products to your skin. These dont actually cool you down but they refresh and have a cooling sensation.

Eat spicy foods, this causes you to perspire and lose heat.

Take regular cool (not cold) baths and showers.

Put your feet in a bowl of cool (not cold) water.

Wear light, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or silk.

Hot air rises, downstairs rooms are generally cooler than upstairs ones so open doors to allow the heat to escape upwards

Spray yourself with water droplets (thoroughly clean out a trigger spray bottle and fill it with water or use an atomiser), better still get a misting fan

Wear wet clothes or at least a wet tee-shirt, once they dry out then wet them again.

I spend a lot of time in Africa and temperatures regularly exceed 40C, a combination of regular cool showers and wearing wet clothing usually does the trick.
Leave your windows open all night when its the coldest then close the windows right when it starts getting hot.
Fill it with dry ice. One way or another that will solve your problem.
You can do several things, the best ways are:

open windows at night time,

close curtains during the day to prevent the suns energy from entering the room, heating it up

and i find the best way to keep cold when tying to sleep (nothing to do with the room) is to have a cold shower before you go to your bedroom if you find it too hot to sleep.
dry ice blocks under your matress
air conditioning it works for me
Most people handle dry or sensible heat just fine, if they aren

The problem is that humanity has problems predicting next week

What evidence is there that man isn

Hi Elena,

Its perhaps not so much that theres *evidence* that man isnt causing global warming, more that theres other possible explanations.

What I mean by this is that there are a number of alternative explanations that have been proposed over the years. However, when examined objectively and critically none of these other ideas can explain the present warming. This doesnt prove that man is or isnt causing global warming, what it does demonstrate is that no alternative explanation has come to light. Ill explain the proof part later.

For example, its often claimed that the present warming is being caused by natural cycles. The skeptics tend to leave it at that and hope that the argument sounds convincing enough. In reality, because theyre cycles they come and go at regular intervals, this means that theyre entirely predictable. There are numerous natural cycles and when we add together all the different effects we find that Earth should have been cooling very slightly for some time now.

Quite often people blame the Sun. It wont come as any surprise to learn that for decades weve been monitoring the Sun and can measure with incredible accuracy the amount of energy being received. Whilst theres an 11 year cycle associated with the solar cycles, the overall trend is one of very slightly decreasing solar output; thus we should be cooling and not warming.

Mike uses another popular argument and claims that every planet in the solar system is also warming. This is completely untrue. Seven of the 189 moons and planets in the solar system are warming (Earth, Enceladus, Mars, Triton, Pluto, Io and Jupiter) and in each case the cause is unique to that solar body.

Ottawa Mike then talks about a lack of a warming trend in the last 10 to 15 years, this is another argument which is popular amongst the skeptics. In climatology a trend is based on events over periods of at least 30 years, anything less is subject to too many short term variables. When we look at the 30 year temperature trend we find that Earth has warmed every year since 1966. Heres a graph I produced 3 weeks ago, its constructed from several billion readings taken over the last 160 years, the red line is the 30 year trend http://www.flickr.com/photos/trevorandcl

For the absolute proof that humans are a factor we need to delve into both chemistry and physics.

The explanation for why global warming occurs (natural and manmade) can be found at the atomic level. In essence, the vibrational frequency of thermal radiation is the same as that of the greenhouse gases thus allowing for absorption and retransmission of the heat energy. What this means is that the more greenhouse gases there are in the atmosphere the more heat will be retained.

Where the chemistry side comes into play is through isotopic analysis. Carbon has three different isotopes - the same atom but with a different number of neutrons. The carbon within the carbon dioxide that is released by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, has a different isotopic ratio to naturally occurring carbon dioxide and thus we can establish just how much of the CO2 in the atmosphere is from human sources.

For millions of years the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere varied between 180 and 290 parts per million by volume, in the last 100 years it has rocketed to 394ppmv.

All told, there are now 40% more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than at any time since the earliest humans walked on the planet.

With such a dramatic increase in the concentrations of greenhouse gases the atmosphere has no alternative other than to retain more heat energy.
The entire problem with this issue is a lack of evidence.

There is little concrete evidence which supports or recants man

Are there any salt water swamps?

Yep! They are generally called marshes when they have saltwater. You can find tons of them all along the coast really. They usually have tall grass, and a bunch of channels of water zig zagging through. They are a very important habitat for crabs, birds, shellfish, fish, and other marine critters. The water levels also correspond to the tides as well, so low tide they can appear to be just mud, and high tide you see the channels.
Yes.
hello
A saltwater swamp or marsh is formed by the flooding and draining of seawater. Evidence of one would be the plant called the Mangrove, which can survive in conditions like so.

So yes, there are saltwater swamps.

Do solar panels produce Carbon Dioxide?

I know that they do when they are in production, but do they when they are being used?
The answer is both yes and no; with our current technology their manufacture produces quite a bit of CO2, however, once in use they are clean.
no
No, there are no by-products from using solar panels as they are virtually zero maintenance (you wash them down once a year).

They also last 15-20 years so any carbon dioxide produced during manufacture is compensated for more than adequately.
You will be pleased to know that PV or Photovoltaic Solar Panels do not produce Carbon Dioxide.
mmm no.
No, for help ; open the second

Why are people in such denial about our dependence on farmers?

We deny how the changing weather is affecting farm food production now.

We deny how the population is growing yet farmland is not.

We deny how all dead civilizations grew and declined according to their food supply.

And we still think of farmers as backward and unintelligent.
Im not sure We do with the advent of Corporate Farms taking over the Family Farms, the Hick thing is no longer a concern. What is a concern is all of the chemicals theyre pumping into the ground in order to squeeze out just a couple more bushels of grain. The continued growth of the fields by removing trees that protects the topsoil from blowing away. That is where the backward and unintelligent thing comes into play. Its not real intelligent to poison the ground that is serving you well, and to remove the trees leaving the topsoil unprotected is down right stupid did they not learn anything from the Dust Bowl days?

We dont deny that the weather is changing, however; some do dispute or deny that it is a man-made thing. It matters little man-made or not, it is changing and WE need to admit that fact and take measures NOW to prepare for the worst (see my tree removal statement).

We do not deny how the population is growing yet farmland is not hell, some countries are setting limits on how many children people can have (China for one). We here in the U.S. havent noticed the overgrowth of the population because we have so much open land here. People living in Europe are however feeling the crunch.

Im not even sure we deny how dead civilizations grew and then declined according to their food supply (or lack there of) I agree that some just are not paying attention. It seems that the human race as a whole, is self-destructive. We look for the quick fix, rather than a long-term solution to issues facing us. We are slowly killing our planet thus, slowly killing ourselves.
I have a huge amount of respect for farmers. Were fortunate to live out in the country and are surrounded by farmland, all the farmers round here are wonderful people who work incredibly hard and provide a vital service. I wouldnt have a bad word said against them.
